15|The Little Red Hen was No Nonsense

Let's revisit the lessons of The Little Red Hen from our childhood. The truth is, this story goes back even further to 1874.  The popularity really grew with the baby boomer generation in the Golden Books during the 40's and 50's.  The new book that I read from was published in 2001 and instead of baking bread, it is about cake. Mmmm interesting! Funny though that today we are in the sour dough bread baking era. Nonetheless, it is so much more than about baking, isn't it? What resonated with me the most about this book in today's culture, is the feeling that hard work is not as revered as it once was.  Taking responsibility for one's own needs, having initiative, accepting personal accountability and being helpful to others seems to have less impact.  It used to be that getting something for nothing was an embarrassment.  Today it can seem more like entitlement.  Creating simple ways for children to feel pride and accomplishment can foster a work ethic within themselves but also with helping others to do the same.  The reward comes after the work, especially when doing it with a grandparent.  I think we can all agree on that!
